My group and I were tasked with exploring “What will Indre Østfold Municipality’s innovation capability and capacity look like in 2053?” by our three specialists from Indre Østfold Municipality. The approach we were to use was speculative design. Speculative design differs from other design approaches in that its purpose is not to directly solve a problem but rather to identify and explore the problem while fostering discussion.

Future scenarios
We gathered insights about the municipality and looked at driving forces in the local area and the world in general. This collection of information formed the foundation for the development of our future scenarios. We created four completely different scenarios. They are overdramatic, but the important part is not the story itself, but the message behind the stories. They illustrate the directions society could be pulled towards if we do not take action early.
